Why do you choose to invest in developing your staff?

“Investing in staff was a decision that was made because we’ve got to look to the future and the only way that we could see that we were going to bring younger people through into the company was take on an Apprentice, and obviously it’s about finding the right person for the right role.”

Why did you choose The Sheffield College?

“I chose The Sheffield College through a recommendation, through another company that had actually worked with them in the past. When I first took on an Apprentice, I was a little bit apprehensive as to how much extra work myself and the company would have to put into it, but all that is taken care of.”

What do you like most about working with us?

“My experience of working with The Sheffield College has been a very positive one. They are very proactive, they do regular visits to the site to check on the role of the Apprentice, what he’s getting out of it and if he’s happy, and if we’re happy with him and especially to make sure that he’s doing everything that is expected of him, not just in the workplace but with his college work as well. That has been a major positive as far as I’m concerned because it just takes so much pressure off.

Would you recommend Apprenticeships to other companies?

Neil: “I would definitely recommend other companies to take on Apprentices if they are looking to invest in more staff. They can teach them how to fit into their role and what’s expected of them, and I would definitely recommend The Sheffield College to anybody.

What are the key issues affecting your business or sector and how does investing in your staff combat this?

“We need to bring younger people through because obviously, retirements are going to come, we’re not getting any younger. It’s a younger person’s job rather than an older person’s job so it seemed the perfect way to develop George as an investment for the company.”
