Meet the tutor - Tim McNeill
Published: 20th of October 2024
Meet Tim McNeill, our Work-Based Learning Tutor for Plumbing and Gas at The Sheffield College.
Born and raised in Sheffield, Tim has built an impressive career in the gas industry, which began in 2000 after he left school. He first gained experience fitting gas fires on new-build housing estates across the North of England and Wales, before taking on a role at British Gas in 2007. As a service and repair engineer with British Gas, Tim completed his NVQ Level 3 in Gas Maintenance.
In January 2024, Tim started working at The Sheffield College, bringing with him years of hands-on experience. Having only recently stepped away from the tools, his knowledge remains fresh and up to date, covering both modern and older appliances. Tim’s in-depth understanding of central heating systems, from design and installation to repair, along with his expertise in natural gas, LPG and electrical diagnostics, makes him a great help for Apprentices.
Tim’s teaching approach is practical and engaging, using visual aids to help students better understand complex concepts. “I believe in keeping students engaged by showing them real-world examples and giving them the benefit of my years in the gas industry.”
When asked why someone should consider an Apprenticeship, Tim’s advice is simple: “It’s about getting hands-on experience while learning. You’ll gain knowledge from real situations that you’ll face in the field, which is invaluable when it comes to building your career.”
He also emphasises the benefits of studying at The Sheffield College, highlighting the supportive environment and access to state-of-the-art facilities. “The college offers a range of equipment that helps students gain practical experience, which is essential for developing the skills needed in the industry.”
If you’re looking to begin or advance your career in plumbing or gas, Tim and the Apprenticeships+ team at The Sheffield College are here to guide you every step of the way.
