In a move to support the UK’s workforce, the government has announced the relaxation of English and maths requirements for adult Apprentices. This policy change aims to remove barriers for adult learners and address skills shortages across various sectors.
With immediate effect, some Apprentices aged 19 and over no longer need to achieve Level 2 English and maths qualifications to complete their Apprenticeship programmes. The change is expected to enable up to 10,000 additional Apprentices annually to successfully complete their training, particularly in high demand industries.
What do these reforms mean for employers like you?
Larger talent pool: By changing the English and maths requirements, a broader range of candidates can now qualify for Apprenticeships, providing employers with access to a more diverse talent pool.
Accelerated training: The reduced Apprenticeship duration means quicker onboarding, which is crucial for sectors with labour shortages.
Enhanced flexibility: For some standards, employers now have flexibility to determine the necessity of English and maths qualifications based on specific occupational needs, allowing for a more tailored training approach.
The government’s decision to relax English and maths requirement for adult Apprentices signifies a strategic effort to enhance workforce development and economic growth. By embracing these changes, employers have the opportunity to grow a more skilled and versatile workforce, tailored to the evolving demands of sectors.
