How you can build real-world skills through Apprenticeships
Published: 22nd of April 2026
In today’s job market, employers value experience just as highly as qualifications, Apprenticeships provide a powerful way to gain both. Rather than relying solely on classroom learning, they emphasise hands-on, practical experience which helps individuals build skills that are directly applicable in the workplace.
For many people, learning by doing is far more effective than learning by listening. Apprentices apply knowledge in real-world situations from day one, which builds both confidence and competence.
Take Johnson, an Apprentice at The Sheffield College, currently completing his Level 2 Commis Chef Apprenticeship at Guyshi Bar & Restaurant. After initially studying Health & Social Care, he chose to pursue his passion for cooking through an Apprenticeship. With support from his head chef, he’s developing strong kitchen skills and growing in confidence by applying what he learns in college directly in a real working environment. Hear more about Johnson’s story here.
Similarly, Morgan, who is completing his Level 3 Multichannel Marketing Apprenticeship at Uniplex, demonstrates how Apprenticeships build valuable, in-demand skills. Described as reliable and hardworking, Morgan has already made an impact by helping to improve the organisation’s website and fill key skill gaps within the team. Hear more about Morgan’s story here.
These examples highlight what makes Apprenticeships so effective. They don’t just teach knowledge, but they develop practical skills, workplace confidence, and a clear sense of career direction. By learning on the job, our students gain the experience and skills that truly matter setting them up for long-term success.
