Wicker Pharmacy

Published: 1st July 2025

We recently caught up with Ellie Bennett, Managing Director of Wicker Pharmacy, to explore how one of Sheffield’s best-known independent pharmacies is developing the next generation of pharmacy professionals in partnership with The Sheffield College, Apprenticeships+.

Founded in January 1952 and open every single day since, Wicker Pharmacy prides itself on reliable, face-to-face care at the very moment people need it most. Apprenticeships, Ellie told us, are now central to ensuring that service remains strong for decades to come.

Why choose The Sheffield College?

“We wanted a training provider that could keep learners motivated and give in-person support with any tricky topics,” Ellie explained. “Because the College is local and brilliant at communicating, it feels like a genuine team effort around every Apprentice.”

Which programmes are employees enrolled on?

Wicker Pharmacy currently places staff on the Pharmacy Technician Apprenticeship, Level 3, combining college study with hands-on experience at the pharmacy counter and in the dispensary.

What qualities do you look for in an Apprentice?

“Our patients often come to us in tough moments, so friendliness, empathy and crystal-clear communication are essential,” Ellie said. “They also need to be comfortable with maths as dose calculations must be spot-on, and able to stay calm under pressure when phones ring, queues build, and prescriptions pile up.”

How has hiring Apprentices benefited the business?

“We train Pharmacy Technicians every year. Some move on to other parts of the health sector, but many stay and become the backbone of our team,” Ellie noted. “We take a long-term view, each Apprentice is a potential future leader.”

The pharmacy even partners with local GP surgeries, so Apprentices can spend time in primary-care settings.

“That cross-sector experience broadens their horizons and opens up extra career options once they qualify,” Ellie added.

Most important skill gained?

While technical knowledge is vital, Ellie believes confidence tops the list.

“By the end of the programme they can handle the varied, often unexpected requests we get from the public. It’s a life skill that serves them forever.”

Advice for employers taking on their first Apprentice

“Don’t expect too much too soon, settling into a busy workplace takes time. Give each Apprentice a dedicated mentor who checks in regularly, so small issues never turn into big problems. The investment pays off.”

Advice for future Apprentices

“Make sure you’re genuinely interested before you start. Shadow someone if you can, pharmacy means being on your feet all day, and that isn’t for everyone. But if it clicks, dive in; it’s a fantastic opportunity.”

Working with The Sheffield College

“The support from the College, especially Lauren and Kirsty, has been fantastic,” Ellie said. “They care about every student, tailor support where it’s needed and keep in close touch with us, so we know our learners are thriving and we, in turn, gain great employees.”

Science, Dental and Pharmacy

Science, dental and pharmacy are all underpinned by three main subjects (biology, chemistry and physics) but the career opportunities that evolve out of studying them are huge and may be quite surprising.
