Tom Humphreys

Published: 14th April 2026

Tom is currently completing his Civil Engineering Apprenticeship while working as a Trainee Engineer at Cidon Construction. He is gaining valuable experience on a major project with Sheffield Forgemasters and, after completing his Level 3 and Level 4 qualifications, aims to progress into a fully qualified Engineer.

When asked about the most important skills he has developed so far, Tom said:

“The most important skills I have learned so far include using a Total Station to accurately set out and learning how to read construction drawings. This is vital, as most of the information needed for setting out comes from these drawings, and being able to extract the correct details is essential for working effectively.

Another important skill is understanding how a site is run and what is expected of everyone, as without clear roles there would be little cohesion and the site wouldn’t run smoothly.”

What facilities have you enjoyed using or found particularly useful during your course?

"I think the library/learning centre is a helpful space to have access to, as it can sometimes be a more productive environment."

What would you like to do when you finish your current qualification?

“After completing Level 3 and Level 4, I think my main goal is to fully immerse myself in becoming a qualified Engineer and then potentially pursue further education. However, having said that, I will have to see how I feel at the time and whether or not I think it will be beneficial in the long term.”

Has your course prepared you to take the next step in your education or career?

“It is still early days, but I think by the end of it I will have a much better understanding not only of the course, but also of the job role and the environment I will be working in.”

It is great to see Tom developing both technical and professional skills in a real working environment. We look forward to continuing to support his journey and seeing him grow and succeed in his future career.
