We recently caught up with Emily Anson, Assistant General Manager at Scott Anson Painters and Decorators Ltd, to hear how the family-run business is investing in the next generation of skilled tradespeople by working alongside The Sheffield College, Apprenticeships+.
Why did you choose to work with The Sheffield College?
“We’ve been working with The Sheffield College for over a decade now,” Emily shared. “They’ve always taken a flexible and collaborative approach that works really well for us as employers. Their staff are incredibly experienced, the facilities are modern, and the support offered to both learners and businesses is second to none.”
As a proud Sheffield-based business with nearly 30 years in the construction industry, Scott Anson Painters and Decorators Ltd is passionate about nurturing local talent and creating lasting career opportunities within their team.
“It’s about investing in people from our own community,” Emily added. “We’re committed to helping them grow into experienced professionals who stay with us for the long term.”
What Apprenticeships do your team currently use?
The company currently supports Apprentices on the Level 2 Painter and Decorator Apprenticeship. This practical, hands-on programme helps learners gain the skills they need to succeed in a fast-paced construction environment.
What do you look for in an Apprentice?
“We’re a close-knit team, a real work family, so attitude is everything,” Emily explained. “We look for someone who’s reliable, eager to learn and willing to get stuck in. Having a bit of natural flair for decorating helps, but we’re here to teach the skills. What matters most is their drive to grow and be part of the team.”
What are the benefits of hiring an Apprentice?
For Scott Anson Painters and Decorators Ltd, bringing Apprentices into the fold has had a positive impact across the board.
“It allows us to develop people in a way that works for our business,” said Emily. “We’re able to pass on nearly 30 years of industry knowledge while building a team that understands how we operate, our standards, our values, our way of working.”
Apprentices also bring a fresh perspective and a willingness to adapt, something that’s especially valuable in a company that delivers everything from new builds and externals to specialist coatings and national projects.
What skills have your Apprentices developed the most?
“Our Apprentices gain so much hands-on experience,” Emily said. “From learning how to prepare surfaces and apply different types of finishes, to understanding health and safety on-site and managing time across varied jobs. But it’s not just technical, they grow in confidence, communication and professionalism too.”
What advice would you give to employers thinking of hiring their first Apprentice?
“Go into it with the mindset that you're developing someone for the future of your business,” Emily advised. “Be ready to support them and involve your team in mentoring. If you commit to their development, you’ll see just how much they bring to the table.”
What would you say to someone considering becoming an Apprentice?
“It’s a brilliant way to start a career,” Emily said. “You get to learn from experienced professionals, earn a wage, and pick up real-world skills that you’ll use for the rest of your working life. Plus, in a company like ours, you’ll be part of a team that genuinely wants to see you succeed.”
How have you found working with The Sheffield College?
“The partnership has been fantastic,” Emily said. “They’re supportive at every stage – whether it’s initial recruitment, helping Apprentices settle in, or tracking their progress through reviews. It feels like a real collaboration.”
Scott Anson Painters and Decorators Ltd continues to lead by example when it comes to Apprenticeships. Proving that with the right support and the right training provider, you can build a stronger, more resilient business from the ground up.
