Meet Owin, a Level 2 Piling Operative Apprentice at Bachy Soletanche. Throughout his Apprenticeship, he has had the opportunity to travel the UK, meet new people and develop a wide range of theoretical and practical skills.
Owin’s chose to do an Apprenticeship as “it’s a way of learning whilst earning money and developing skills.” During his Apprenticeship, he’s learned how to work safely on site, support his team and assist with maintenance of tools and equipment.
A requirement to complete all Apprenticeships is to have an English and maths qualification. Owin wanted to complete his programme with a training provider that would support him to achieve this, he added:
“The Sheffield College are very successful in helping Apprentices pass their maths and English that are needed to pass the Apprenticeship programme.”
Owin added that his employer has been crucial to his development on his Apprenticeship and has said: “My employer has helped me with all my skills that I’ve learnt, which makes me feel valued.” As mentioned earlier, he has gained a selection of skills: “the main ones involve teamwork and problem solving.”
After his Apprenticeship, Owin has a clear plan for his future career: “I would like to become a full-time piling operative as my skills evolve around it.” His Apprenticeship will give him the skills, experience and connections to achieve this goal.
