Meet Matthew, 37, a Level 3 Pharmacy Technician based at The Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
Starting out as a Domestic Assistant at The Northern General Hospital, Matthew wanted a career where he could “grow and have meaningful work”. This is when he started showing interest in progressing in the NHS and started working in the pharmacy department of The Sheffield Children’s Hospital. After spending some time in the area, Matthew continued to show interest in progressing and was approached to start a level 3 Apprenticeship.
When asked what the most important skills are that he's gained in his Apprenticeship to date, Matthew said:
“I am particularly proud that I have made the transition to the pharmacy, and the assignments I have produced so far.
“I am enthusiastically looking forward to seeing what the Apprenticeship brings in the future. The knowledge that I am learning and retaining through the combination of college-based teachings and work-based practical application is increasing day by day.”
Matthew’s story isn’t just about personal growth, it is also an example of how a supportive environment and mentors can help on the journey.
“All the staff involved in my Apprenticeship journey have been amazing, very supportive and continue to help me develop my knowledge and skills”.
Through the Apprenticeship, Matthew has enjoyed the balance of online resources and in-person sessions, as he could focus on assignments whilst using the online resources and was able to be more social and practical during the in-person sessions.
And as for what’s next? Matthew wants to look for full-time employment or another Apprenticeship to grow his experience and knowledge with the aim of becoming a Senior Pharmacy Technician.
