We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Helen Trinh, Senior Learning and Development Advisor at Keltbray, about Apprenticeships and the positive impact of their partnership with The Sheffield College, Apprenticeships+.

Keltbray operates in the Construction and Built Environment sector, specialising in providing integrated engineering and construction services. With a growing workforce since their inception, Keltbray has become a key player in the industry, offering a range of Apprenticeships designed to build a skilled workforce and bridge the industry’s skill gap.

To understand why Keltbray chose The Sheffield College as their training provider, we asked Helen about their decision.

We believe that The Sheffield College has a strong reputation for delivering high-quality Apprenticeship programmes,” Helen explained. “Their experienced tutors provide our Apprentices with the hands-on support they need to become fully qualified in their fields, especially in specialised areas like the Level 2 Piling Apprenticeship.

Keltbray currently enrols employees in a variety of Apprenticeships, including:

• Level 2 Piling

• Level 2 Scaffolder

• Level 2 Groundworker

• Level 2 Formworker

• Level 3 Business Administration

• Level 4 and 6 Civil Engineer

• Level 4 and 6 Quantity Surveyor

• Level 6 Site Manager or Project Manager

When discussing what Keltbray looks for in an Apprentice, Helen highlighted, “We seek candidates who are eager to learn and have a proactive approach. A strong work ethic, good communication skills and a genuine interest in the construction industry are key qualities we value.

We then asked Helen about the benefits that hiring Apprentices has brought to Keltbray.

With the skill shortages in our industry, hiring Apprentices is crucial,” Helen stated. “We invest in developing young talent, offering them various career pathways in the construction and built environment sector. This not only helps bridge the skills gap but also ensures we have a sustainable workforce for the future.

When asked about the most important skills their employees develop during their Apprenticeship, Helen emphasised, “Critical thinking and problem-solving are crucial, as well as the ability to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world situations. Communication and teamwork skills are also key as they collaborate with colleagues and clients.

For employers considering hiring their first Apprentice, Helen offered some practical advice.

Prepare thoroughly with a structured plan and clear objectives. Select the right mentor who can guide the Apprentice and help them integrate into the team. This creates a supportive environment that fosters growth.

Reflecting on their partnership with The Sheffield College, Helen noted, “The Sheffield College provides continuous support and great communication. Their experienced tutors ensure our Apprentices receive the best possible training, both in theory and practice.

Keltbray’s collaboration with The Sheffield College, Apprenticeships+, exemplifies how targeted training and support can develop skilled professionals, helping to secure the future of the construction industry.
