From day one, Jessica Furniss knew she wanted to take a practical route into the world of engineering and her Apprenticeship with Apprenticeships+ at The Sheffield College offered just that.

With her sights set on becoming more qualified and growing her career at Liberty Steel, Jessica is already well on the way to making her mark in a traditionally male-dominated industry.

“My Training Assessment Facilitator is very supportive and a lovely person. He has taught me loads of important skills during my time here which I hope to use in my work career.”

In the engineering world, learning by doing is key and that’s exactly what Jessica loved most about the course.

“I love the hands-on tasks that we have been doing. It makes it so much more enjoyable.”

From machinery handling to problem-solving on the job, these tasks have helped bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical application. And it’s clear that Jessica thrives in that environment, one where she's challenged, supported, and encouraged to grow.

Her employer, Liberty Steel, has played a major role in making her feel valued and empowered:

“I have been supported the entire time I’ve been here and made to feel like I’m important.”

That sense of belonging is vital in an Apprenticeship, and it’s given Jessica the drive to look ahead with confidence. Her goal? To keep developing, keep studying, and take her qualifications to the next level.

“Hopefully, I will be able to study and become more qualified while at Liberty.”
