We recently caught up with Nick Baker, Project Manager and Dan James, Installation and Commission Engineer at BeaconMedeas UK, to learn about their experience with Apprenticeships and The Sheffield College, Apprenticeships+.

BeaconMedaes UK, are leaders in medical gas pipeline systems and have been at the forefront of supplying hospitals and healthcare facilities with essential services. Their commitment to quality and innovation is reflected in their approach to training and development.

We started by asking Dan about the benefits of hiring Apprentices within the business.

They bring fresh perspectives and new ideas, which really helps us refine our procedures and expand our industry knowledge,” Dan explained. “It’s also rewarding when you show them how to complete a task and they do it successfully - it’s clear they’re learning and growing in their role.

When it comes to on-the-job training, Dan’s advice to employers is simple but crucial.

Be patient and spend time with them, especially when it comes to showing them how to do certain tasks again.

Nick then shared what qualities BeaconMedaes look for in an Apprentice.

We want someone who’s hardworking, punctual and has a clean, tidy appearance, given the nature of our work. It’s also important that they have a genuine passion and want to get involved in the service we offer.

Whilst at BeaconMedeas, Apprentices develop a wide range of skills. According to Nick, “They learn pipe fitting, gain knowledge about hospital operations, patient environments, health and safety and most importantly they develop a strong work ethic.

For employers thinking of hiring their first Apprentice, Nick’s advice is clear.

Be patient and don’t rush the process. Make sure the Apprentice is the right for both the job and the company.

Finally, Nick spoke highly of his experience working alongside The Sheffield College.

“Working with The Sheffield College has been really, really good. Sam, our Apprentice, receives regular updates on his progress and the college shows a lot of interest in what we do.

Thank you to Dan and Nick for spending the time to speak with us. Click here to find out more about how we can work with your business.
